Welcome to the Construction Management Academy at The Villages Charter High School. I'm looking forward to another GREAT year at VHS!! I know that all the faculty and administration will do their best to get you a quality education. I'll explain a little more about what we do in this academy below but first a little about me:
I'm originally from New Jersey and this is my 6th year teaching the Construction Management Academy. I've been involved in all phases of construction, you might say I was born into it...............As a matter of fact I was. I started working in my father's construction business as soon as I could hold a hammer. We (my twin brother and I) worked every summer until we started full time the day after I graduated from Hunterdon Central High School .
I have 40 (plus) years experience in most phases of residential, light commercial and industrial work.
I was a business owner, carpenter, union commercial diver, a rock climber and private pilot.
I am now a dad, grandfather, teacher, and golfer. Not necessarily in that order.
Construction Management 1
We start the year with HBI Core Curriculum which focuses on tool and equipment safety. During the first few weeks, a safety instructor from Romac Building Supply will instruct the students for their OSHA 10 Certification. Next we move on to hand and power tools, and basic construction math. The next chapters will include blueprint reading, communication and employability skills and we'll finish up the year with material handling. There are written exams and practical testing with each chapter. Providing the students complete the course they will achieve an HBI certification.
Construction Management 2/3
Construction starts with a quick review of basic safety and then we're off to the jobsite. We are building our 6th house for Habitat for Humanity/Lake Sumter in Bushnell, Fla.. This school year the students will have to work side by side with skilled craftsman such as masons, carpenters, electricians and plumbers. The students will complete about 80% of the house using their skills learned in Construction 1. We'll also start HBI Carpentry which will give the students the basics on wall and floor systems, and ceiling and roof framing. They will get introduced to building envelope systems and simple stair layout. Providing the students complete the course they will achieve an HBI Carpentry certification.
At VHS Construction Academy, we’re interested in helping anyone involved in building or remodeling, no matter the size of the project. We specialize in Doors, Flooring, and Windows, and offer high-quality, brand-name building materials. Our priority is to help you in any way we can in order to see your project through to completion.
